| Description |
Creatine kinase BB (CK-BB) is a cytoplasmic enzyme involved in energy homeostasis. The encoded protein reversibly catalyzes phosphate transfer between ATP and various phosphates, such as creatine phosphate. Creatine kinase BB (CK-BB) is primarily localized in brain tissue and is typically not present in measurable quantities in normal adult serum. However, serum levels may rise following severe damage to CK-BB-containing tissues. Elevated serum CK-BB levels have been associated with breast cancer, ovarian cancer, prostate cancer, colon cancer, other gastrointestinal cancers, and small cell lung carcinoma. |
